The project is still alive. Barely, but alive.
Sequoias keep dying after they grow above 6 feet. Some survive the loss of the top and major branches and re-sprout in the spring.
Some are less lucky and never return to life.
Since growing sequoias is not going all that great in Iowa, I decided to experiment with growing sequoia bonsais. The idea is to keep them in a greenhouse over winter and let them grow in pots in the garden when it's not as cold.
As a side hobby, I am now doing bonsai pots for sequoias.
Thank you for the update. I have been wondering. It's a shame if didn't go better but it was worth a try. I was wondering if having many in close proximity in a low spot with frequent wet ground would help.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back! What did the soil temperature sensors show in the winter? How deep and for how long did the ground freeze? In my neighborhood near Chicago, my chickens are quietly wintering in a homemade greenhouse made from old window panes. The climate of gunpowder is changing. It is possible that in 5-7 years a tree grown with such winter protection will grow a corky bark and will not freeze.
ReplyDeleteNot gunpowder , but slowly.
