Boris - thanks for posting all this info about your sequoias. My wife and I took a cross country road trip this summer, driving from Maine to California and back. We bought a redwood seedling at the park where you can drive a car through a redwood, and it's grown from about 2" to 14" since July on our porch. We love it. Keep up the great work and I'll keep checking in. Joe
ReplyDeleteThis is a follow up to the above comment. I moved the redwood inside in mid-November. It's in a south facing window with a grow light on it each morning and evening to make up for the short periods of natural light. As of Christmas 2013 the redwood is 22" tall at the center stalk, but another branch was loving the grow light and is now 28" tall. I have the tree tied to a dowel to keep it straight because I think it's top heavy and would lean over otherwise. Not sure how to get a strong trunk so it grows tall and straight.

Joe, thanks for update. Do you have a website where you post pictures? I would love to see your progress.
ReplyDeleteMy sequoias are still under a foot tall.
Boris - our redwood continues to grow at an amazing rate. When it got to around 38 inches tall about 3 inches at the top of the center stalk folded over and became pinched off so I removed it. It's now 2 weeks later and new branches are coming out at that the top. Since then the growth has mostly been in the top-most side branches, one of which is now taller than the center stalk. The redwood has outgrown the original dowel and my yardstick, I tied it to a taller stick and it's now nearing 4' tall. I worry it's been growing too fast and the center stalk can't yet support the weight of larger branches at the top. I think this is due to it being under 2 grow lights for 12 hours a day all winter and the lights being continually repositioned to stay within 4 - 6 inches of the top of the plant as it grows.
ReplyDeleteThe weather is finally starting to warm up in Maine and I'm going to set it on the porch for some good sunlight today. But it still dips below freezing some nights so I'll keep bringing it in for a few more weeks.
To recap - it was about 2" tall when we bought it at the gift shop at the park in northern California with the drive-through redwood in July 2013. In the 9 months we've had it it's grown to about 4 feet tall and seems to be doing very well. Hopefully being outside in the sun will help the trunk and lower branches grow out so it gets more sturdy. Next update I'll try to have a link to some photos. Joe
This is amazing growth for Maine! I would love to see your pictures. Thanks.
